Defibrillator Fundraising Success!

Learn To Dance 2013 SquareAfter a particularly energetic Jive & Quickstep class, with our over 50’s group on a Tuesday afternoon, we were asked [in jest] where the nearest defibrillator was.  Whilst asked jokingly this did however get us thinking…

Enquiries with Burnham Parish Council revealed that the nearest AED (Automated External Defibrillator) would be at Burnham Park Hall, around a 5 minute drive from the studio.  Whilst AEDs have been shown to double the survival rate of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, their effectiveness reduces by around 10% for every minute delay in their usage.

Given that our studio is based within football playing fields and is a hotspot for dog walkers and joggers, we felt the benefit of having an AED outside the studio could not be overlooked if it meant the difference between life or death for someone.

Burnham Parish Council offered to pay for the installation and hosting of the external cabinet if we were able to raise enough to cover the net cost of the equipment and cabinet of £1,366.25.

We looked at a variety of options for how we might raise the funds required, and eventually decided on a fun day of dance sessions on Monday 28th May.

Any excess funds raised would then be donated to the Check Heart Appeal, a fundraising page set up to raise money for C-R-Y (Cardiac Risk in the Young), a charity close to Antony & Emma’s heart.

Check Heart LogoIn the morning we had an American Smooth workshop, a FitSteps taster and a lunchtime Tea Dance; whilst the afternoon saw ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, Bollywood and Charleston inspired workshops.

All of that did mean that Antony had to have at least 5 costume changes!

We received a number of donations, both before and after the day, from those that were unable to attend and we also held a raffle with a variety of prizes including a LearnToDance gift voucher and the top prize of a family photoshoot with Emma-Louise Walton Photography.

The raffle was closed and drawn a week later live on our Facebook Page, although we started to panic when a number of duplicate winners started being drawn (regardless of how much Antony shook and mixed up the tickets) but it evened out in the end!

Live draw of our Defibrillator Fundraising raffle

Gepostet von Learn To Dance am Dienstag, 5. Juni 2018

Between the fundraising day, raffle and donations LearnToDance raised a total of £1,855.63!

We instructed Burnham Parish Council to order the defibrillator and are pleased to announce that this has now been installed!

defibrillatorWe would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved in the running/administration of the event, everyone that donated or attended the day, and Burnham Parish Council for their support.

Much appreciated,

Antony, Emma and the LearnToDance team

About LearnToDance

LearnToDance is a Ballroom and Latin American Dance School run by husband and wife team Antony & Emma-Louise Holeksa and has been running since 2006.  Classes for all levels and ages, and personal tuition, take place throughout the week, as well as dance breaks and private events.

In 2016 we moved into our own dedicated studio at the Cherry Orchard in Burnham and now offer sessions most days of the week.

About Check Heart Appeal

This has been set up to honour the memory of Ben Birch who died on the 22nd May 2013 of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (S.A.D.S).

Undiagnosed heart conditions claim at least 12 young people every week in the UK and our chosen charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young, (CRY) fights to raise awareness, support bereaved families and promote heart screening, ECG testing programmes and medical research into S.A.D.S.

Ben was 29 years old and was taken from us suddenly. There were no warning signs and we hope that raising any amount of money to help prevent other familes from suffering the loss we have suffered will be a great way to remember him.

About C-R-Y

Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD. CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research. CRY publishes and distributes medical information written by leading cardiologists for the general public. CRY funds specialist referral, screening and cardiac pathology services at leading UK hospitals.

About Defibrillators

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electricity which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson, and the use of AEDs is taught in many first aid, certified first responder, and basic life support (BLS) level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes.

Uncorrected, these cardiac conditions (ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, asystole) rapidly lead to irreversible brain damage and death, once cardiac arrest takes place. After approximately three to five minutes in cardiac arrest, irreversible brain/tissue damage may begin to occur. For every minute that a person in cardiac arrest goes without being successfully treated (by defibrillation), the chance of survival decreases by 7 percent per minute in the first 3 minutes, and decreases by 10 percent per minute as time advances beyond ~3 minutes.

Observational studies have shown that in out of hospital cardiac arrest, public access defibrillators when used were associated with 40% median survival. When operated by non-dispatched lay first responders they have the highest likelihood of leading to survival.

Cherry Orchard Dance Studio Launch

Cherry Orchard Dance Studio Launch

Cherry Orchard Dance StudioBuilding work has been pretty much completed and our carpenters are coming in next week to begin laying the floor.  This should be completed by the end of the week and we will then begin the process of moving across our classes and lessons.

Assuming there are no more delays we plan to hold our official launch event on Friday 9th December before our scheduled Winter Wonderland Christmas Social.

The free launch event will be at 7pm and then our Christmas Social will follow at the usual price.

We would love to see you all there but if not we look forward to welcoming you at classes or lessons as they move over there.

The full address will be Cherry Orchard Pavilion, George Pitcher Memorial Ground, Britwell Road, Burnham, SL1 8DL.

[Hopefully] Final Painting Party

Our main hall has been painted, barring touch up work once the builders and carpenters have finished, and we are now looking to paint our smaller ‘Studio 3’ and finish the corridor.

Antony will be down the studio on Saturday 19th November from around midday (possibly earlier) to try and get this all completed and as always we would welcome any assistance anyone is able to offer.

Also if anyone has any experience with putting together kitchen base units that would be really helpful.

Let us know if you can come along, or feel free to just turn up on the day, but please remember parking at weekends does get busier during the football season.

Class Schedule Changes

All of our classes, except our Maidenhead sessions, will be phased into the new studio from the end of this month (subject to the successful completion of works).

The first sessions in the new studio will be our Wednesday private lessons and evening classes from Wednesday 30th November (FitSteps will move over the following week).

From Friday 2nd December all other sessions will then take place at the new studio assuming we haven’t run into any teething problems.

Our timetable will remain as currently scheduled and we will evaluate this as we settle in over the next few months.

Please note that weekends during the morning and early afternoon are very busy for parking during the football season, so you may need to allow more time when coming to classes or workshops as we only have a limited amount of allocated spaces.

No more FitSteps on Thursday evenings

Learn To Dance 2013 SquareDue to declining numbers over the last few months we have come to the decision to end our Thursday evening FitSteps class in Maidenhead.

Our classes on a Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in Eton Wick will still continue and those that have purchased a package may use them at these classes.

We may resume the classes after the summer if there is enough interest.

Don’t forget this Sunday is our Beginner Samba Workshop in Eton Wick if you fancy learning how to dance the Samba.

Smooth, sophisticated, elegant. All words to describe Antony, but also his favourite dance the Foxtrot. Classic Sinatra and Bobby Darin are best but Paul Anka’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is a great twist on a modern classic.

Beginner Argentine Tango Workshop Sunday 18th January

Lessons are funWHEN: SUNDAY 18th JANUARY 2015

TIME: 1.30PM-3.30PM

PRICE: £20pp or £30 per couple

Our LearnToDance monthly beginner workshop classes take place at Eton Wick Village Hall, Eton Wick Road, Eton Wick, SL4 6LT.

Designed for beginners our monthly beginner workshops are a great way to learn the basics of a dance in a concentrated 2 hour workshop.

We look at a different dance each month. This month’s dance is the Argentine Tango.

Originating in Buenos Aires this father of the Ballroom Tango has a much freer and organic structure. In Argentina at the end of the 19th century the men practised with each other to become better dancers as the ratio of immigrant male workers to women was so high that only the best dancers could ‘get the girl’.

As with all LearnToDance classes and workshops a partner is not required.

Merengue Beginner Workshop this Sunday in Eton Wick with LearnToDance

Learn To Dance LogoMerengue Beginner Workshop this Sunday in Eton Wick with LearnToDance

Never know what to do on the dance floor at a party, worried at weddings, or planning a Caribbean cruise?  Even if you can’t dance, LearnToDance’s Beginner Merengue Workshop in Eton Wick is just the class for you on Sunday 16th February at the Eton Wick Village Hall, Eton Wick Road, Eton Wick, SL4 6LT.

Our Monthly Beginner Workshops are fun and friendly classes that aim to give you simple routines that you can take away and dance anywhere.  The Merengue is an informal dance with a basic marching action and if you can walk, you can dance the Merengue.  We use a mixture of traditional Merengue music as well as modern pop songs such as ‘Pound the Alarm’ by Nicki Minaj to show just how versatile the dance can be.

Happy DancersJust a few of our most recent comments from students:

  • ‘even as a complete beginner, I was made to feel like a dancer’
  • ‘they make learning to dance such unbelievable fun’
  • ‘great fun, great exercise and lovely people’
  • ‘they are brilliant teachers and very patient’
  • ‘A very friendly place to dance and learn to dance’

And for anyone who’s thinking, ‘But I can’t dance’ or ‘I don’t have anyone to dance with’, there’s no excuse – you don’t have to able to dance and you don’t need a partner! You just have to want to learn to dance and have fun.

So, if you’re ready to take to the floor and Merengue like you’ve never Merengue’d before, all you need to do is be at the Eton Wick Village Hall on Sunday 16th February at 1.30pm where the team from LearnToDance will be waiting to teach you everything you need to know. For more information, you can contact Antony on 07736 272225, email us at or check out our website at

The workshop is £20 per person or £30 for a couple dancing together.  You can book online directly on our website.

Introduction to Merengue Workshop

We’ve decided to replace Paso Doble from our regular classes with the Merengue.  The Merengue is a dance from the Dominican Republic and has a slightly different style to our other Latin American dances which we feel will give you a more versatile dance to use ‘out in the open.’

To give you a feel for the dance before we phase it in we have decided to run an ‘Introduction to Merengue’ Workshop on Sunday 23rd June in Eton Wick.

This one-off workshop is a chance to get a feel for the basics of the dance, along with the specific techniques that differentiate this dance from our usual selection.

The class will take place 1.30pm-3.30pm at

Eton Wick Village Hall
Eton Wick Road
Eton Wick

Our workshops are £20pp or £30 if you are a couple dancing together.

You can read more about Merengue on Wikipedia.

If you’re interested in coming along please let us know, advanced booking is not required but is recommended.
